11 tips on how to deal with anxiety while diving

Is diving scary? Obviously, the water can be magical but equally scary! Feeling anxious is a very common thing in diving and can manifest itself emotionally and physically. But don’t let it stop you, anxiety is not a reason to avoid diving! We have collected for you several ways with which you can overcome your fear and enjoy the magical world that is underwater:

1.Give up caffeine

As you probably know, caffeine is a stimulant and therefore can cause anxiety in general. Therefore, you should avoid it on the day of diving.

2. Give up alcohol

Alcohol, on the other hand, is a depressant and therefore can lead to consequences even if you drink the night before diving. In addition, alcohol can cause dehydration, so you should avoid drinking too much alcohol after diving.

3. Be aware of your diving abilities

Don’t be afraid to say no! Yes, even if you are already on the boat, and yes, even if you are already in the water. Especially if you do not have the necessary qualification for this.

4. Try guided meditation

In a short search you can find videos or apps that offer guided meditation that can relieve the anxiety and stress you experience in preparation for diving. Give it a try and see!

5. Try breathing exercises from the mouth

practice this on the way to diving and be sure to breathe only from the mouth. No one understands how different it is to breathe only from the mouth until he does not.

6. Repeat basic rules

Do it frequently, at home or in the pool, even if you’re not fully equipped. That way, when you’re experiencing stress or blackout, you can easily remember what you need to do. The more you practice, the more naturally and quickly it will come to you. It can save you and your Buddy too.

7. Try to think about possible problems and how to solve them

Imagine what scares you the most and try to understand why, what might go wrong, and try to make yourself comfortable with it. Afraid of fish? Afraid of fish? Afraid that the mask will be released / filled with water? Afraid of sharks? Learn about what scares you and slowly start to see it in a different light.

8. Communication, communication, communication

Don’t be afraid to tell your Buddy or your guide that you’re experiencing anxiety. They can help you overcome this and maybe even empathize with you.

9. Focus on breathing underwater

Take air in, take air out. If you feel stressed underwater, remember to focus on your breathing. This will help them relax and finally, even enjoy the dive!

10. Drink a lot and eat healthy

The better you feel physically, the less tense you will be on the subject and the more focused you will feel. Drink plenty of water the day before diving, on the morning of the dive and also between dives. In addition, eat healthy and avoid foods that will make you feel bad. Don’t forget to bring a reusable bottle of drink and keep the sea!

11. Jump into the water

The longer you stay above the surface of the water, the more you will think about your anxiety and become more stressed. Do yourself a favor, take a breath and jump into the water! We promise you that you will enjoy.
